soul camera
Viktoria Binges lives and works in London since 2009, originally from Budapest, Hungary.
Her photography work is conceptual, created through photo essays that build narratives reflecting on societal dynamics and individual experiences within those larger structures. Often working with highly personal elements of her own life or that of close friends, she creates a gentle intimacy within her photographs. Balancing a sensitive aesthetic with a directness of gaze, recent projects have centred on colourism, miscarriage, political misconduct, and life-changing illness.
“I utilise and consider the photography process in its entirety to explore each subject matter. The conditions for making the connection, learning the story, having the moment in private or with the other person plus the choice of equipment to take the photograph are all important. Although each project is prompted by powerful emotion, for example, the deep grief felt on losing a pregnancy or the raw sense of injustice at high-level corruption, the development becomes a reflective and healing activity.
I have used this process to move through periods where I’ve had to confront my mortality and to work through a friend’s experience of colourism within her own family, as well as in a form of support for Hungarian citizens faced with no other option but to speak out about the oppression of the ruling political ‘elite’.”
With formal training in facilitating Therapeutic Photography and interest in connections between Psychology and Photography, her work is an exploration of the camera into the soul.
