Sympathy with Small Things When Time Stops
2020 · Artist book
Sympathy with Small Things When Time Stops was made during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Shortly before lockdown, I found out I was pregnant. A month later, I learned I had experienced a missed miscarriage. It had passed silently.

Grief unfolded within the strange stillness of lockdown. Photography had helped me through a difficult experience before, so I returned to it, needing somewhere for the pain to go. I began photographing at home and on my once-daily walks, often along the nearby canal.

My attention turned to small things: shifting light, water, plants, and fleeting encounters that somehow seemed to hold what I was feeling. Raindrops met tears, while moments of sunshine briefly lifted the darkness. Over time, photographing these small things helped me stay with the loss and eventually begin to let go.
